Audrey Vanessa (Miss World Indonesia 2023): The Beauty with a Purpose from Manado

Introduction

Audrey Vanessa Susilo, or better known as Audrey Vanessa, is a 24-year-old model and beauty queen from Manado, the capital city of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia. She was crowned as Miss Indonesia 2022 on September 15, 2022, after competing with 33 other contestants from different provinces. She will be the official representative of Indonesia at the Miss World 2023 contest, which is scheduled to be held in India in March 2024.

Background and Education of Audrey Vanessa

Audrey Vanessa was born on December 23, 1999, to Rudy Susilo and Grace Shella Muljanto, who are of Chinese-Minahasa Bantik descent. She grew up in a Catholic family and is an active member of the Catholic Youth Organization (OMK) of St. Theresia de Lisieux Malalayang Parish, Manado Diocese, and the Holy Trinity Community, Manado.

Audrey completed her primary and secondary education at Manado Independent School, where she excelled both academically and extracurricularly. She was the head of the student council, the captain of the basketball team, and the leader of the choir. She also participated in various competitions, such as the National Science Olympiad, the English Speech Contest, and the Model United Nations.

In 2021, Audrey graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting degree from Monash University, one of the prestigious universities in Australia. She is currently pursuing her Master of Banking and Finance degree at the same university. Audrey is fluent in English, Indonesian, and Mandarin, and is learning Spanish and French.

Beauty Pageant Journey

Audrey Vanessa started her beauty pageant career by winning the title of Miss Manado 2022, which qualified her to compete in the Miss Indonesia 2022 pageant. She represented North Sulawesi province and impressed the judges with her beauty, intelligence, and charisma. She also won the special awards of Miss Talent and Miss Social Media, which showcased her skills and popularity.

In the final round of the Miss Indonesia 2022 pageant, Audrey was asked by Liliana Tanoesoedibjo, one of the judges, about her opinion on the title of Beauty with a Purpose, which is the motto of Miss Indonesia and Miss World. She answered:

“Miss Indonesia with ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ is more than just a title, she must be willing to take responsibility, to be a role model, to inspire, and to make a positive impact for Indonesia and the world. She must have a vision and a mission that align with the values of Miss Indonesia and Miss World, such as education, health, environment, culture, and social welfare. She must also have a passion and a dedication to pursue her purpose and to make her dreams come true.”

Her answer won the hearts of the judges and the audience, and she was crowned as Miss Indonesia 2022 by the outgoing queen, Puteri Indonesia 2021, Ayu Maulida Putri. She also received the sash of Miss World Indonesia 2023, which means that she will represent Indonesia at the Miss World 2023 pageant.

Miss World 2023 Journey

Audrey Vanessa is the representative of Indonesia at the 71st Miss World pageant, which is currently taking place in Mumbai, India. She is one of the top 10 finalists for the Beauty With a Purpose challenge, with her project “Break the Silence”, which aims to raise awareness and prevent child sexual abuse in Indonesia. She also placed third in the Talent challenge, along with Tunisia and Northern Ireland, showcasing her skills in singing and playing the piano. 

She also placed in top 25 in Head to Head challenge. She was also placed in top 32 in Sports challenge. She was placed in top 20 in Top Model challenge. She is competing against 111 other contestants from around the world for the coveted crown of Miss World 2024.

Social and Environmental Activities

Audrey Vanessa is not only a beauty queen, but also a social and environmental activist. She is the co-founder of REEFORMERS, a non-governmental organization that focuses on coral reef conservation and the empowerment of traditional fishermen in the outer islands of Indonesia, especially in the Sangihe and Talaud Islands in North Sulawesi, which border the Philippines.

Audrey and her friends initiated REEFORMERS in 2020, after witnessing the destruction of coral reefs and the decline of fish stocks due to illegal fishing, pollution, and climate change. They decided to take action by raising awareness, conducting research, providing education, and implementing solutions to restore the coral reefs and the livelihoods of the fishermen.

One of the solutions that REEFORMERS has implemented is the installation of artificial reefs, which are structures that mimic the natural reefs and provide habitats for marine life. The artificial reefs are made from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, tires, and concrete, and are designed to be eco-friendly and durable. The artificial reefs also serve as attractions for tourists, who can enjoy snorkeling and diving while supporting the local economy.

Audrey has chosen REEFORMERS as her Beauty with a Purpose project, which she will present at the Miss World 2023 pageant. She hopes that her project will not only benefit the environment and the people of Sangihe and Talaud, but also inspire other young people to take action and make a difference in their own communities.

Future Plans and Aspirations
