How Gwendolyne Fourniol is making a difference through education

Gwendolyne Fourniol, or Gwen, is not just a beauty queen. She is also a passionate advocate for children’s education, especially for those who come from underprivileged backgrounds. Gwen’s advocacy is to support the Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation, Inc., a non-government organization that provides educational opportunities and holistic development for disadvantaged children and youth.

Gwendolyne Fourniol has a personal connection to ERDA, as it was the foundation that helped her mother, Sim Bolivar, finish her studies and escape poverty. Sim grew up in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental, with six siblings and only one of them was able to go to school. Sim moved to Manila to look for a better life, and there she met Fr. Pierre Tritz, SJ, the founder of ERDA. Fr. Tritz sponsored Sim’s education at the Philippine Women’s University, where she graduated with a degree in Psychology. Sim later worked as an au pair in Luxembourg, where she met her husband, Thierry Fourniol. Sim is now a nurse in London, while Thierry is a senior analyst in Belgium.

Gwendolyne Fourniol credits ERDA for giving her the chance to exist, and she wants to give back to the foundation that changed her mother’s life. Gwen has been involved in various activities and projects to raise awareness and funds for ERDA. She has launched a donation drive to collect school supplies, books, toys, and clothes for the ERDA children. She has also organized a makeover day for the ERDA mothers as a Mother’s Day treat.

She has conducted a confidence-building course for the ERDA mothers, teaching them how to walk like queens. She has also joined the ERDA volunteers in distributing school supplies to different schools in Manila. And most recently, she has started a “Shoebox Christmas” gift drive, where she invites people to fill shoeboxes with gifts for the ERDA children.

Gwendolyne Fourniol believes that education is the key to empowering children and communities, and she hopes that her advocacy will inspire more people to support ERDA and its mission. She also hopes that her story will show that beauty is not just about physical appearance, but also about having a purpose and making a difference.
